Do-it-yourself board game Carcassonne

The idea of creating a board game came to my mind spontaneously. For several months now, behind my cupboard was a sheet of a three-millimeter fiberboard, which I already don’t remember why I bought. By and large, the desire to bungle something from him was the reason. On the Internet, I came across a rather interesting community of PnP users. The very concept of PnP stands for Print and Play - print and play. There are quite a few scans of various games on forums and websites dedicated to such a hobby. Before, I especially did not play board games, so I chose it almost at random. The main criterion was that the game can be played both together and by the company. At first the choice fell on the game “Colonialists”, but it soon became clear that there were three players in it. Soon I came across Carcassonne, it was decided to do it. In general, I spent a lot of time on this game, at least a month. So I really hope that it will be useful.

Game description

Carcassonne is a strategic board economic game. The game process consists in the formation of the playing field in the process of the game using tiles - small square sections of the map with fragments of objects on them - fields, roads, cities and monasteries. On the margins are the mipl, from the English MyPipple - my people. These are figures of subjects who at the completion of construction of objects bring points. I will not describe all the rules, they will be attached at the end of the article. We understood the main thing that we need to make - these are tiles and miply. I’ll say in advance that I didn’t do Miplov, but more on that later. It is also worth making a box for storing all this stuff.

Materials required:

  • Sheet fiberboard smooth on both sides 2.5 mm. The standard size of such sheets is 1.2 m by 2.4 m. Half the sheet is enough for everything.
  • Double-sided tape.
  • Glue for the box. PVA, 88th, epoxy, to your taste.
  • Enamel balloon

Instruments:

  • Jigsaw and canvases to it
  • Good sharp scissors
  • Color printer. Well, or photo salon
  • Sandpaper 120,180 or 220 grit

Tiles

And so, first of all we print the tiles. When I started making the game I didn’t have a printer yet, so I printed in photo studio on photo paper. Now I would print it on self-adhesive photo paper, which would save me a lot of time. So if possible, do so.

Different printers can print with different margins, so the size of the squares for all may vary slightly. In my case, the squares came out 47 millimeters. We take this value and begin to draw the matrix on the fiberboard. We do everything strictly under the corner. Here you really need to calculate a little. I sawed with an ordinary manual jigsaw, the thickness of the cut which is about half a millimeter. I took another half millimeter for sandpaper processing. If you have a sawing machine - then calculate the margin for sampling with a disk.

And cut the squares. Frankly, doing it with a jigsaw is a titanic work. It is not hard, no, but it is very tiring. In general, I needed to cut more than two hundred squares. And sandpaper each face, that is, more than eight hundred sides. It takes a lot of time. However, this is all real.

After processing the faces, I forgot to take a photo, but in principle this is visible in other photos. After the squares are ready, I went over them. He removed the most defective ones, yet manually making perfectly identical squares is difficult. When the squares are ready, we begin to glue pictures on them. If printed on self-adhesive, then just cut and glue. If on ordinary photo paper, then one more action is required. In a hardware store we buy ordinary double-sided tape. Take immediately a large fifty-meter reel. We glue the joint on the back of the sheets, and then we cut it. It turns out essentially the same self-adhesive, only home-made. Well, and glue.

You can glue the shirts first, then the front side, you can vice versa, you can take turns, as you prefer.

I did not just the basic version, but immediately with the additions. One of the additions called "Count of Carcassonne" is a large field of size 3x4 tiles.

Box

In total, I made about ten additions. The basic version contains 72 tiles. As I said, I have more than 200 tons, everything else is different additions, both large and small. For convenience of storage, even at the stage of manufacturing the game, I thought about the box. The box is calculated based on the size and thickness of your tiles. I think no one will be able to glue the box, however, if anyone needs it, write in the comments, I can throw off model boxes in the PRO100.

The box was made, so to speak, classic, with a retractable lid.

Miply

Making miplov is another story. I will say right away - I did not do them. At first I wanted to make heat clay clay mixtures. I bought a couple of pieces for testing, but something did not go well. First of all, I just started wrapping up with tiles, and there was no longer any desire to sculpt miplules. Secondly, the clay is not such a budget thing. Then, in order to save, I decided to make it from salt dough. You can watch how this is done in a video called "Salty Dough Mipla". If you make a game, for example, as a family, then this is a good option. Dad saws, mom glues, children sculpt figures. But the most stressful. I decided to buy mipla. But here disappointment did not leave me. For all players, even mipla for the base game without add-ons will cost more than all materials along with printing. And additions are also needed. Modern technologies, namely 3D printing, have become the liferaft. For just $ 6, I printed out all the necessary figures for 4 players. The plans to order a set for two more.

Of course it’s a bit beyonddo it yourself", on the other hand, there would be a printer - it would print itself. But on the economic side, this is an ideal option in terms of price and quality.

Also for different chips such bags were made here. It turns out comfortable and pretty. About soldering the film in the near future I will post a separate article.

I glued round chips on thick cardboard wads for hunting cartridges. They are cheap and sold without a license in stores like "angler hunter." Cutting circles is the most difficult, but here is the finished option.

I glued the rest of the chips onto thick cardboard from Soviet folders.
In the near future there is an idea to sew a bag for the "portable version". And print on it the image of the scoring field. This can be done where they print on T-shirts and mugs, now even in small towns there are similar offices.

Summing up, I want to say that in fact I am very pleased with the work done. The game has been repeatedly appreciated by friends, another way has appeared to embellish winter evening gatherings. Below are 4 archives. The first is tiles for the base game. The second and third are tiles with additions, the last one is the rules (not everything, for the base game and the main additions, you have to search for the rules for other additions yourself, because the total weight of all the rules is about 140 megabytes) and a few pictures that may come in handy.

By the way, I advise you to print the rules. They are not so complicated, but you get confused at first, especially when you explain to new participants.

I myself did not fully understand. I printed only black and white, color seems to be from some addition or publication. Was therefore attached. I can only advise you to print one color shirt for the start tile, or darken one tile in some kind of graphic editor so that you can easily find it. I’m already used to postpone it separately, but when I play with friends they constantly forget and knead the starting tile with everyone else, then we look and sit.
Thanks for the article and archives on the game!
Tell me, in carcassone-baza.rar there are two types of shirts, which one to glue?
