Japanese-style forged hatchet knife

I welcome fans to work with metal, I propose to consider instructions for the manufacture of a kitchen knife-hatchet. Homemade made by forging from two metals, on one side there is carbon steel on the blade, this part forms the hatchet blade, and iron was used as the main material for the hatchet. The homemade product is made in the Japanese spirit, the hatchet is quite convenient and looks interesting. If the project interests you, I propose to study it in more detail!

Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
- iron plate;
- steel plate (the author has 1086 M steel);
- wood for the handle;
- epoxy adhesive;
- brass tube or round;
- brass rods;
- oil for wood.

Tool List:
- oven and blacksmith tools;
- lathe;
- drilling machine;
- Miter saw;
- belt grinding machine;
- tape cutting machine;
- sandpaper files, etc.

Hatchet manufacturing process:

Step one. Forging blanks
We have two plates, one of steel and the other of iron. In general, you can make a hatchet entirely of steel, but to save money, the author uses iron. The steel plate will be on one side and, after sharpening the hatchet, there will be carbon steel in its blade.
We weld two workpieces, heat it up and sprinkle it with brown, proceed to forging. Thanks to the storm, we will not allow the oxidation process and two blanks can be chained together.

The result should be one solid plate. In the process of forging, the author also formed the tail of the hatchet.

Step Two Slopes
After forging, we perform grinding along the contour in order to remove forging defects and then form the slopes. There will only be one descent on such an hatchet, and which side depends on where the side with carbon steel is. When grinding the side with ordinary iron, we get to carbon steel, and we will have it in the blade. The hatchet can be made under the right and left hand, this should not be forgotten during the forging process, when pulling the shank.

Step Three Quenching
We proceed to hardening the hatchet, and we can only harden the blade, since it is made of carbon steel. We heat the hatchet to a yellowish glow and lower it into water or oil. After hardening, the blade will not have to be taken with a file, now it is solid and will hold sharpening for a long time. Depending on the grade of steel, you may need another vacation of steel.

Step Four Handle
For the handle you need a board or bar with a beautiful wood texture. We cut two pads and make recesses in them under the tail of the homemade product. Next, the handle is glued onto epoxy glue, and after the glue dries, we proceed to grinding. To begin with, you will need to set the desired profile of the handle, here you can work with files or staples. Well, then grind the handle on a tape machine or manually, using sandpaper.

Step Five Ring and assembly
In front of the handle there is a brass ring, it strengthens the handle and with it the handle looks more interesting. You can make such a ring from a piece of pipe of a suitable diameter, the author decided to carve the ring from the round timber on a lathe.

Then the knife can be assembled, everything is glued together with epoxy glue. You also need to drill holes and install pins from brass rods. In the end, everything will be held securely.

So that the handle does not absorb water, we impregnate it with oil or epoxy glue. The ax is ready, the homemade product looks quite interesting, in fact, the tool also showed itself perfectly. On this project is over, I hope you liked the homemade. Good luck and creative inspiration, if you decide to repeat this. Do not forget to share your ideas and homemade things with us!
