Hello to all fans to work with steel. Today we will look at how to make a simple and reliable tomahawk from reinforcement. Such homemade you can chop branches, chop wood, and you can also use the tool as a fire ax. Depending on the particular brand of reinforcement, it may be possible to harden it, as a result, the blade will remain sharp for a long time. If you need a solid blade, you can weld or rivet a piece of carbon steel to an ax. If you are interested in the project, I propose to study it in more detail!
Materials and tools used by the author:
Material List:
- fittings;
- leather belt or rope (for finishing the handle).
Tool List:
- rope;
- welding machine;
- grinder;
- oven and blacksmith tool;
- belt sander;
- oil for hardening;
- paint for metal and soil;
- glue.
Hatchet manufacturing process:
Step one. Forging
In the forging process, a piece of reinforcement turns into an ax contour. To understand what an ax should be like, it can be folded first from the rope, and the rope will also allow you to determine the length of the reinforcement.
Well, then we heat up the fittings in the right places and bend into the ax profile.
When the shape of the ax is ready, beat off the blade, and also form the back tooth of the ax.
Step Two Welding and refinement
So that the ax is strong, and the handle does not spring, we weld the handle using a welding machine. We clean the entire hatchet well with a wire nozzle for a grinder or drill to remove all scale and dirt.
We also grind the main blade on a belt grinder. If desired, the tooth can be modified by welding a piece of carbon steel as a tip.
Step Three Quenching
To keep the blade of the ax hardened, it must be hardened. We heat the steel to a yellowish glow and immerse in oil. If the reinforcement is made of suitable steel with carbon, the blade will be tempered and it will be durable. The author also tempered the tooth located on the reverse side.
Step Four Painting
After hardening, wash the hatchet well with oil detergents, and also wipe it with a solvent.You will also need to grind the blade and back tooth again to remove the scale that has formed after hardening.
After all these measures, we coat the steel with a layer of soil and paint. The paint will protect the steel from rust and the painted ax looks more interesting.
Step Five Handle finish
We trim the handle with leather or rope so that the recoil does not hit on the hands and corns from long work are not formed. The author tightly wrapped the handle with leather tape and put it on the glue. At the beginning and end of the tape, you can install shrink tubes.
That's all, now the hatchet is completely ready, you can experience it. Homemade chopping fine growth, they can also easily chop wood chips on the kindling of the furnace. The project is completed on this, I hope you liked the homemade work, and you found useful thoughts. Good luck and creative inspiration, if you decide to repeat this.
