A simple aquarium pump and more

I welcome all fans to craft, I propose to consider instructions for making a simple and productive pump for an aquarium do it yourself. Such a pump will easily drive water in a circle, powered by a 12V voltage. The author’s pump turned out to be quite powerful, they can easily feed a decorative fountain. The author used the RS550 model, and parts for the body were found in a plumbing store. Of course, everything is not very reliable assembled, only for demonstration, but with the right approach, you can make a durable pump. If the project interests you, I propose to study it in more detail!

Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
- motor RS550;
- plumbing details (see photo);
- glue for PVC;
- a piece of the bicycle chamber;
- sheet metal for the impeller (tin);
- washers and cogs;
- switch, speed controller (optional);
- power supply for 12V or battery;
- wires.

Tool List:
- drill and step drill;
- soldering iron;
- a hacksaw for metal;
- glue gun.

Manufacturing process homemade:

Step one. Impeller
The author made the impeller for the pump quite simple, it has 4 blades. You can make it from thin sheet metal, a tin can or a lid for canning is suitable. A coupling must be installed in the center of the impeller to install the impeller on the motor shaft. All the necessary details will be soldered well with a soldering iron. It is possible to make an impeller of plastic on glue, but it will be less durable than metal.

Step Two Install the motor in the housing
The author selected a piece of a plumbing pipe as a housing for the motor; a drawback of such a housing may be that the motor is poorly cooled, in other words, if the pump is in cold water, the motor should not overheat.

The weak point of such a pump is the stuffing box, it must be tight, otherwise if water gets into the motor, it will soon put it out of order. The author made an oil seal from a bicycle chamber, but it is better to take rubber thicker, for example, a car camera. The motor shaft should fit tightly into the stuffing box bore.And in order to protect everything as much as possible, under the stuffing box we stuff a thick grease such as solid oil.

The author himself sealed the gland to the motor case with superglue, and then in the case the author glued everything with silicone, you can also glue it with hot glue, but silicone is more reliable.

Step Three Further assembly
The author prepared all the details in advance, and he had to stick everything together well. It is important that the glue is thick, the sealant is suitable, water should not get into the case. We put the back cover on the case, the wires are displayed through the hole. The author pasted the wires into the case on hot glue so that water would not pass. It remains to dry everything well and you can experience it.

Step Four Test
We turn to the pump tests, the author put a piece of hose on the outgoing tube to demonstrate it. The pump works perfectly, the pressure can be adjusted using a simple speed control. At maximum power, the pump raises water to a decent height, which is quite enough for both the aquarium and the fountain.

The project is completed on this, I hope you liked the homemade work, and you found useful thoughts. Good luck and creative inspiration, if you decide to repeat this. Do not forget to share your ideas and homemade things with us!
