DIY impact starter screwdriver


Hello to all lovers homemade. In this article I will talk about how to make an impact screwdriver that will help you unscrew rusty or soured fasteners, for example, a bolt in an aluminum case. All the parts that are needed to assemble this homemade product are easily accessible, especially if you are the owner auto.

To make an impact screwdriver from a starter do it yourself, you will need:
* Angle grinder, cutting wheel, safety glasses, gloves
* Bench vise
* Faulty car starter
* Old tetrahedral wrench
* Metal pipe with a diameter equal to the diameter of the bendix
* Metal lathe, feed cutter
* A pair of small springs
* Metal washer
* Welding machine, welding mask, gaiters
* Drilling machine, drill bit for metal with a diameter of 5 mm
* Tap with M6 thread
* Kern
* M6 bolt
* Boring cutter
* Small hammer
* Masking tape
* Spray paint can

Step one.
First of all, you need to disassemble the faulty starter from the car, only two parts will be needed from it,
this is the motor anchor and the bendix, on which the principle of loosening will be based. A non-working starter can be purchased at a metal receiver, for which they will ask for a penny in comparison with the purchase of a factory version of an impact screwdriver.


From the anchor itself, you need to remove the stock, this can be done using the press or powerful locksmith's vice. Also, the anchor can also be knocked out by hammer blows, but in this case there is a risk of deforming it, therefore I do not advise this method. So, we hold the anchor in a vise and squeeze out the rod, after it is completely out, go to the next step.

Step Two
Now a part with slots is needed from the bendix, it can be sawed off using an angle grinder with a cutting disc installed, and then finalized on a lathe to the desired size. When working with an angle grinder, be careful, the power tool must be held tightly in your hands, and do not forget about goggles and gloves. The splined part will subsequently dress on the shaft and transmit rotation to it from impact.

Step Three
In order to be able to install various heads on this screwdriver, it is necessary to cut the tetrahedral part from the head using angle grinders.

The screwdriver was based on a round metal blank, in which a step was made to install the splined part from the bendix using a lathe and a boring tool.


If you do not have a lathe, then the base can be made of a pipe of suitable diameter, preferably with a wall thickness of at least 2 mm. This is how the complete instrument will look.

Step Four
To fix the rod, we clamp the base in a vice and, using a drilling machine, drill a hole with a diameter of 5 mm for a bolt.

Next, we clamp the part in a vice on a workbench and use a tap to cut the thread under the M6 ​​bolt, add special grease during thread cutting, which reduces the wear of the tap.

After that, we check how the bolt is screwed in by hand.

Milling must be done on the stock itself, since there is no milling machine, we tighten the part in a vice and use a angle grinder to make a small groove that will not allow the stock to fall out freely.



Step Five
It's time for welding. We install the splined part in the base and fix it in a vice, then with the help of a welding machine we weld the parts together. When working with the welding machine, use personal protective equipment, a welding mask and gaiters.

After this, tap the seam to remove the slag formed during the welding process.


Let the parts cool down a bit, then clamp it into the three-jaw chuck of the lathe and remove the weld marks with a feed cutter.

The result is such a basis.

Step Six
We clamp the rod with the tetrahedron on it in a vice and weld them to each other with the help of a welding machine, then tap the slag with a hammer and remove the unevenness of the weld on the lathe.


As it turned out, during testing it was revealed that the shaft wedged slightly at the base when the hammer hit, the springs in this case could not push it back. It was possible to solve this problem by installing an additional thick washer, which was welded end-to-end to the slots, and then machined on a lathe.

We assemble all the details in a single design, then move on to painting it.



Using a spray can of hammer paint, we transform our homemade tool, the tetrahedron and the spline part are pre-glued with masking tape.

After the paint dries, we get such a very nice impact screwdriver, it only remains to install a ball with a spring for fixing the nozzles, and change the usual bolt to a bolt with a countersunk head.



Seventh step.
The homemade tool is completely ready, now you can test it in real conditions. It is convenient for them to unscrew the long bolts on the alternator, the starter, which are screwed into the aluminum block, after a lapse of time the thread soups and it is considered practically impossible to unscrew them with an ordinary screwdriver, and with an impact screwdriver such bolts are unscrewed by one or two. Strongly tighten the bolts with a wrench, which we want to unscrew, thereby simulating a rusted or soured threaded connection.


Next, we put a head of a suitable size on the bolt and striking the upper end of the impact screwdriver with a hammer, gradually unscrew the bolt, similarly unscrew the second one.
