I welcome fans to craft, today we will make a simple knife for domestic use from an old file. We need the old file exactly, since in those years the files were made entirely of high-quality carbon steel, and not like now. The knife is made quite simply, without hardening and blacksmithing, the author only released the blade in the oven. Such a knife will be strong and reliable, the blade will remain sharp for a long time. Of course, to do the job efficiently, it would be nice to have a belt sander. If you are interested in the project, I propose to study it in more detail!
Materials and tools used by the author:
Material List:
- old file;
- a tree for overlays;
- oil for wood;
- epoxy adhesive.
Tool List:
- belt sander;
- grinder;
- grinder;
- oven;
- sandpaper;
- clamps;
- jigsaw machine.
The process of making a knife:
Step one. Knife profile
Before making a knife, it is recommended to break off a small piece of the file, the metal should be uniform silver. Good steel will crumble, this is normal for a file.
We draw on the file the desired knife profile with a marker and start cutting. The author works with a grinder, we press the file to the table with a clamp.
After rough cutting we proceed to grinding work, we need to grind off the excess. To solve the problem, the author uses a grinding machine. The profile of the blade is quite simple, so there should be no problems when processing it.
Step Two Slopes
When the profile of the blade is ready, you can make descents, but it is better to do this work after tempering, since it is not very good to let go of thin metal, it can be released too much.
The author makes the descent by eye, a grinder with a thick grinding disc, as well as a grinder, are used as a tool. The author completes the finishing touches on grinding with a belt grinder.
Step Three Vacation
The file steel is hardened too much, it is hard, but brittle, if everything is left as is, the blade will break. To solve the problem, steel must be let go, then it will become flexible. For the procedure we need an oven, the tempering temperature should be about 200 degrees Celsius. You need to warm the blade until it becomes a straw color. Darker colors may indicate that the steel is too loose.
After proper tempering, an excellent blade should turn out, the steel will spring, and the blade will be able to hold sharpening for a long time. At the end, we carry out grinding using fine sandpaper, you can work with water.
Step Four Handle
We assemble the handle, for this we need two boards of suitable thickness. The author cuts two workpieces approximately in the shape of a handle using a jigsaw machine, but you can also handle it with a manual jigsaw.
Now the handle can be glued, for this we pre-wrap the blade with adhesive tape so as not to smear it with glue. For glue, the author uses epoxy. Coat the pads well and press them to the handle with the help of clamps, you can also use a vise.
When the glue dries, we give the handle the final profile with a file on a tree, and then switch to sandpaper. We grind the handle to a perfectly smooth state, this will make the wood beautiful, and the handle will be pleasant to the touch.
The tree must be protected from moisture, soaked in wood oil. Now the handle and knife look great.
Sharpen the knife, good steel can be sharpened to the state of the blade, if you need it. Grinding stones are usually used for sharpening.
This is the end of the project, I hope you homemade I liked it. Good luck and creative inspiration, if you decide to repeat this. Do not forget to share your ideas and homemade things with us!
