How to forge scissors from a suspension spring

Scissors manufacturing process:

Step one. Forging blanks
First we need to straighten the spring, heat it up, align it and cut a piece of the desired length. In the end, we will need two bars, from which the scissors will be made. Gradually, step by step, the author forged the scissor blades. Both parts should be the same, we customize them by eye.













Step Two Pens
Next, we need to bend the handles, this should also not be a problem. Of course, the bend of both handles should also be the same.







Step Three Washers
For the scissors you need to make two washers, the author decided to forge them. The holes in the puck were punched with a special punch, as was done in the old days. First, the author made one thick washer, and then cut it along a hacksaw for metal. The author had to polish the puck with the help of.




Step Four Grinding scissors
We need to grind the scissor knives well so that the planes become perfectly flat. Of course, here again the belt sander comes to the rescue. Having driven both parts to each other, we outline the places and drill a hole for the axis. To begin with, the author uses a screw with a nut as an axis.


















Now we twist the two halves with a screw and nut and we have almost ready scissors in our hands. Now the author makes the markup, removes excess metal and displays the primary descents. The final processing of the scissors was carried out using files.

Step Five Heat treatment
Before hardening, the author decided to put the stamp of his forge on the handle of a knife. Well, then both parts of the scissors need to be normalized, this procedure is necessary in order to relieve internal stresses in the steel after forging. Steel red hot and let the parts cool in the air.

After normalization, the steel can be hardened, it is done classically - with the help of oil.
After hardening, the author made a light grinding and released the steel, guided by the color of the oxide film.






Step Six Profile
The scissor blades must have a special, curved profile, only in this case the scissors will be cut. The author sets the necessary profile with a hammer. We paint over the blades with a marker and grind it on a flat, flat grindstone. As a result, you will see in what places the metal is removed and what bend the blades have. Seventh step. Sharpening
Scissor blades need to be sharpened, sharpening is done exactly at a given angle. The author has a special grinding machine with a clamp, on which degrees can be viewed. The sharpening stone is used wet so that the steel does not overheat.


Step Eight. Scissor assembly
Scissors are almost ready and can be assembled. For assembly, you will need washers made earlier, as well as an iron rod, which will work as an axis. The author anneals the washers and the axis to make the iron soft. Well, then set the axis and hammer blows to form a rivet.

At the end, the scissors need to be coated with oil to protect them from moisture, since the steel used is very rusty. It would be nice to burn steel, so it will be resistant to rust.







Step Nine. Test
As tests, the author easily cuts rather thin paper, and the shears are very convenient to handle. Scissors also easily cut denim and even tree branches. Homemade turned out pretty useful in everyday life.

Author, look in the primer which steels are used for springs and which steels are used for cutting tools. It’s better to roll scissors from what is rolling. The steel from which the springs are made is approximately 50XG (HGA) and has extremely low abrasion resistance and therefore will not hold a sharp cutting edge for more than a video.
