Growth line of colored pencils

Growth line of colored pencils

The master made this growth line for his little daughter. At first he was going to make a ruler of maple, but then decided to make a growth line that no one has. For the manufacture of the line, the master used about 1,400 colored pencils, cut into five parts. The total complexity of about 7000 segments. The ruler is 2.1 meters long and 15 cm wide.
The master hopes that this growth line will become a family heirloom and will be passed on from generation to generation.

Tools and materials:
- Fiberboard laminated;
-Fasteners;
- Colored pencils (except for white);
Epoxy resin;

-Silicone;
- Measuring cups;
-Disposable gloves;
- Wax-based coating;
-A circular saw;
-Bandsaw machine;
-Drum grinder or thicknesser;
Milling cutter;
-Hair dryer;
-Drill;
-Level;
-Roulette;
-Marker;

Step One: Form
First, the master makes the form. The form is made of laminated particleboard. The internal size of the form corresponds to the size of the future ruler.

To reduce adhesion, the master lubricates the mold walls with polishing paste.

In order to avoid leakage, lubricates joints with silicone.

Step Two: Slicing
Next, the master cuts each of 1400 pencils into 5 equal segments. In his work, the master does not use white pencils, so that they do not give a flare when drawing characters.

Step Three: Laying
Now you need to put all the pencils in the form, as densely as possible to each other.

Step Four: Fill
Then the master kneads the epoxy according to the instructions, adds a little black tint and fills it into the mold. The form must be set exactly horizontally. The master filled in for three days. Having poured a small amount of resin over the entire surface, he expected it to seep between the pencils. Some pencils, when filling the first layer, pop up, so you need to monitor the process and, if necessary, adjust.

Step Five: Grinding
The resin froze, and the master disassembled the mold.

Then the master polishes the workpiece.

Step Six: Markup
Now you need to mark the workpiece.

Seventh step: milling
Using a milling cutter cuts out characters.

Step Eight: Fill Characters
Knead epoxy and add whiteness. Fills characters with resin.

After drying, polishes the ruler again.

Step Nine: Top Layer
Now you need to fill in another layer of epoxy. The master closes the workpiece on four sides with packaging material and fills with transparent epoxy. To remove air bubbles, heats the surface with a hairdryer.

Step ten: fine-tuning
After pouring, the master again polishes the ruler. The edges of the ruler are milled (rounded). Cut out slots on the back for suspension.

Now it remains to hang the growth line on the wall.

The whole process of making such a line can be seen in the video.
