Sustainable Rolling Coffee Table

Good day to all. I bring to your attention my version of the simplest manufacturing of a compact enough, stable coffee table-book on wheels.

The idea was to use the available chipboard scraps, edging tape, fasteners and the minimum cost of standard products from a hardware store. The task was to achieve maximum stability when unfolded and the possibility of easy movement on wheels, both in the folded and unfolded state.

In this design was used:
- 16 mm thick chipboard
- castors for of furniture
- furniture hinges
- furniture ties 7mm
- roller latches
- latches
- plywood 6 mm thick
- aluminum corner 30x30x2mm
- edge with glue
- U-shaped PVC profile
- wooden dowels

Of the tools used:
- circular saw
- drill stand
- milling cutter
- metal scissors
- jigsaw
- screwdriver
- files
- clamps
- nippers
- iron (for sticker edgeband)

Tables of similar design and suitable sizes, available for sale in nearby stores, do not have good stability in fully or partially unfolded form (in the photo one of these options). Those. real "somersaults" even with a small load on the edge (tested in practice).

Calculating the dimensions of his design, he proceeded from the sizes of the available chipboard scraps and the minimum number of necessary cuts. The color scheme of the product is “pear” + “cherry”.

The outer corners of the parts were rounded off by the milling cutter, using a milling cutter with an upper bearing, according to the template from a piece of plywood (to achieve the most uniform shape).

The resulting set of product parts.

The side racks on the base and the jumper between them are fastened with furniture ties with a diameter of 7mm (8pcs used).

The central part of the countertop is attached to the side racks on wooden dowels using glue like "liquid nails" (6pcs were used for reliability).

On the loggia in the nest egg I found two loops 540x35mm, apparently still Soviet-made, because they stamped the price of 49 kopecks. It is not known how much they were lying there but on their surface I did not find a single sign of rust !!! Each cut into dimensions of 360mm and 180mm. Cut with scissors for metal. The axis had a bite of wire cutters. For accuracy, a flat plane was used to install the hinges of the countertop 360 mm long.

Additional supports for the wheels of the extendable legs made of chipboard have dimensions 130x55mm. To increase the width of the mounting under the wheels, gaskets made of plywood 6 mm thick were cut. Plywood is treated with quick-drying varnish ХВ-784.

The remaining parts of the 180 mm long hinges and additional wheel supports are fixed on the retractable legs with screws.

For the accuracy of fastening the retractable legs to the side racks, as before, a flat plane was used (a piece of kitchen countertop).
Retractable legs locks are made of aluminum corner 30x30x2mm 40mm long and pieces of plywood 40x30x6mm. The latches on the sides of the countertop are fixed with screws.

Latches are fixed on the extendable legs. This design provides a completely reliable fixation of the legs and the absence of "bumps" when rolling the table in the unfolded state.

Using a flat plane, roller legs latches are set, which ensure the absence of "bumps" when rolling the table when folded.

Since the available PVC profile was enough only for the countertop, the base of the table was trimmed with an edge with an adhesive base (I used an iron as a heater).
On the Internet, I found different opinions on the sticker of the PVC profile. I decided to use the Moment glue strictly according to the instructions.

Before gluing PVC, the profile on the back was treated with large sandpaper and degreased. After gluing, the profile was fixed with a masking tape for a day.

The quality of gluing can only be assessed over time. While it seems to be holding not bad (I did not try to tear off all the dope).
The wheels are installed so that when the legs are folded, they could not touch each other during rotation.

Round holes in the legs are used as handles when they are unfolded and the clips secured to the sides of the tabletop when folding the table are removed.

The total height of the table from the floor (taking into account the wheels) is 528 mm. Other sizes according to the presented scheme. Due to the wheels with rubber coating, the table moves on the floor quite softly, smoothly and does not rumble.

If something is missing in the description, I hope these nuances can be considered in the submitted photos. I apologize in advance for possible errors and typos.

If you need additional information, write to the post office, I will try to be sure to answer.
Feedback, suggestions and comments are very welcome.

The design, in my opinion, turned out to be better than the standard "Soviet" design of the table-book. But there, apparently, it was important to cheapen the product as much as possible.
and the possibility of easy movement on wheels, both in the folded and unfolded state
I imagined how my rather burly wife, "wagged her tail" and the covered holiday table went! And the work itself is certainly serious! xaxa
