Kiridashi knife in a modern style

I welcome all fans to work with steel, today we will look at how to make an excellent and world-famous craft knife “Kiridashi”. Homemade made in a more modern style of very durable steel, which after hardening leaves scratches on the glass. Such a knife will remain sharp for a long time, it will be a pleasure to work with it, because it can be sharpened to the state of a razor. The author used steel tool, brand W1-7, as an analogue, you can use the old Soviet file. The author forged the main profile of the knife, thereby further increasing the strength of steel, and the handle is made of G10, this material is not afraid of water, durable, durable and looks great. If the project interests you, I propose to study it in more detail!

Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
- steel grade W1-7 or similar;
- G10 for linings;
- decorative screws for attaching pads.

Tool List:
- reagent for steel pickling;
- tumbling machine;
- a furnace for hardening and forging;
- belt sander;
- drilling machine;
- sandpaper;
- files;
- blacksmith tools;
- grinder;
- drill;
- tape cutting machine.

The process of making a knife:

Step one. We form the main profile
The author decided to set the main profile for the blade by forging. Thanks to forging, the steel will become even more durable, and you can also save valuable steel. We heat the steel to a yellow glow and work with a hammer.

To align the workpiece in a plane, the author knocked it between two steel plates.

Step Two Grinding
After blacksmithing, the blade needs to be thoroughly polished, cut off the excess and bring it to its final state. First of all, the author processes the workpiece on a belt grinder, we grind the plane, and also grind excess steel along the contour. The blades of such a knife are also straight, we set the desired shape on a surface grinding machine.

Further, the Bulgarian came to the aid of the author, it was necessary to cut out the steel in the place where the grinder does not crawl. Problem areas can be cut into pieces, and irregularities can conveniently be smoothed out using a thick grinding disc. At the end, the author walked around the doghouse with a drill and polished everything manually using sandpaper.

Step Three Bevels
Traditionally, bevels on such knives are made on the one hand, like a chisel.In total, the author on the knife turned out three blades for different needs, we form the bevels using a belt grinder. Also on the knife there is a semicircular area, which is also a knife, here you already need to work with a file, a drill and so on. It is not yet possible to sharpen the blade, the blade awaits hardening in front of it can be sharpened only after hardening.

Step Four Holes
We drill holes in the handle area and cut the thread. With the help of them, we can install pads on decorative screws. It is simple, quick and, if necessary, the lining can be changed. Also, the author drilled holes in the blade itself, you never know what they can come in handy for. It is important to drill holes before hardening, otherwise then it will be very difficult to do.

Step Five Quenching
When all work with steel is completed, it is possible to harden. We heat the blade to a temperature of more than 800 ° C, well-heated steel should not be magnetized. Next, we lower the blade into the oil, and to avoid unpleasant surprises, it is better to warm the oil to 80 degrees.

If everything worked out, you will have a very durable blade in your hands, but keep in mind that hardened steel without tempering can be very brittle. Take a vacation of steel, depending on the brand, usually done in domestic ovens.

The knife blade can now be sharpened, to demonstrate the strength of steel, the author leaves the knife with scratches on a glass jar.

Step Six Etching
If desired, it is possible to etch the steel in ferric chloride or another reagent. Steel will find a beautiful dark coating that will protect it from rust. To make the picture more interesting, you can give the metal traces of wear. For such purposes, the author uses a small home-made tumbling machine, which consists of a piece of sewer pipe and a screwdriver that twists it. Inside the tumbling, you can fill up pebbles, sand, pouring a little water. A little time and get a beautiful picture on the blade.

Seventh step. Pads and assembly
We cut the pads for the knife, the author decided to use G10 as a material, we cut two pads using a tape cutting machine or a hacksaw for metal. The material is quite easy to process, we bring the lining to the desired state with the help of files and sandpaper. We also drill holes and make recesses under the heads of the screws.

We install the pads on the handle, tighten the screws well and now the knife is assembled. The handle does not need additional impregnation; if desired, the handle can be polished. To sharpen such a knife to a razor state, you can use Japanese water stones and hand machines based on them. The project is completed on this, I hope you liked the homemade work, and you found useful thoughts for yourself. Good luck and creative inspiration, if you decide to repeat this, do not forget to share your ideas and homemade things with us!

I look here the knife makers decided to chide the author.
1.
You are not correct, the author, quite possibly, just talked about the work of a foreign master, in particular, the choice of steel speaks about this. Our analogue is a simple U8 tool kit from which almost the entire tool is made, Soviet for sure, which can not be demolished. I agree, according to modern realities, this is not the best material for making knives. Here, the tone is set by foreign, in particular Chinese manufacturers, on the basis of which most promoted brands make products, even Boker.
2.
As for the Criminal Code, we have a confusion with this. On the one hand, everything is simple - there are parameters, if your product fits into them - you can sleep peacefully. But on the other, there is legal practice, when the authorities may need to “solve the problem”, you understand, and here they can immediately look at your product in a different light and there are a bunch of flaws. Do not "get dirty", but the nerves will wear out.
I recognized it in a knife; for folding, the blade length of up to 15 cm is not XO, but with fixes everything is more complicated. Even the shape is important so that it is not spear poin, which in our opinion is not spear-shaped, double-edged, there are more details.
So I will support the author, many who are in the subject are not familiar with the subtleties that not all pros know and it’s not worth scolding an amateur.
And keep the bar of network culture.

AUTHOR DOLBOYBE, he does not know what steel the knives are made of. WATCH YOUR HKKIN AND DO NOT WRITE MORE!

The author is not aware that this blade is not, by a number of signs, a cold weapon, but refers to economic-cutting knives. Another question, why such a knife? In addition to skerin fish, he is not suitable for anything.
