Inconvenient site? No problem!

Among landscape design professionals, a hillside plot is not considered so unfortunate. After all, the experience of creating a variety of gardens on the steepest slopes in Italy has existed since the XII century. Many similar gardens were created in France. True, a territory with a strong slope needs much more labor than a flat area: it will be necessary to carry out terracing. But the mass of opportunities for creating grottoes, stairs, cascades and waterfalls - all this can turn into a “highlight” of such a site.




To create and design a variety of terraces you will need a stone. For retaining walls, you can use logs treated with an antiseptic. In the style of country look decks hollowed out of logs, which will drain water. You can continue the theme of wicker containers, baskets, or a screen-wattle. But, of course, measure should be observed.




Plots on the slopes are often blown away by the winds, so the barbecue and playground, as well as capricious plants will need to be protected from the wind. As a cover, you can use the gazebo, and even better fit a high hedge. However, windy zones are cooler in the heat, and mosquitoes and flies are much smaller here.

As a rule, draining a site is not cheap. The right engineering solution can only be suggested by a specialist. Maybe even cutting through drains - “mines” that divert water into deep soil layers.

There is another option - the site can be zoned. At the bottom point, create a pond, plant marsh and hygrophilous plants, among which there are many beautiful ones.




It is convenient to mask the drainage ditches leading to the reservoir under dry streams using gravel; during excess water intake, they will act for their intended purpose.

An excessively dry area requires an irrigation system.This again is not a problem today - there would be money. Although you can save if you choose the right vegetation. These are inhabitants of sunny open places where the soil is usually dry. They are adapted to moisture deficiency and are able to protect themselves from overheating




A sure sign of such plants is a bluish waxy coating, felting of silver color, glossy leaves. These are chistec, wormwood, stalks, anaphalis, cloves, mullein, sage, bluehead, rudbeckia, stonecrops, onions, cereals.




You can get rid of the noise of a nearby street by sprinkling an earthen rampart and planting a hedge of trees on it. You can even create an alley and arrange fruit trees on the inside. In this case, trees with a narrow crown, for example, pyramidal poplars, are suitable.
