Hello to all lovers homemade, this article will help you transform an old wine barrel into something more, namely a coffee table. So if in your the garage or somewhere else the old barrel is lying around, then do not rush to throw it away, since you can make a useful thing out of it. Also, by its originality, the table will attract the attention of guests, and at its disposal it will also have a separate place for storing various little things. In this article, I will describe how the author made a home-made coffee table.
In order to make such a table you need:
* Wine barrel
* A few boards
* Material for processing, varnish or stain, wood oil is also suitable
* Tape measure and pencil
* Sandpaper of different grit
* Bolts and screws
* A circular saw
* Electric drill
* Electric fret saw
This is all that is needed to create a homemade table from a barrel.
Step one.
First of all, you need to decide which barrel the table will be made with, after which, using a circular saw, you need to saw the barrel along in half. When working with a circular saw, be careful and maintain safety measures, wear safety glasses, gloves and a respirator if necessary, since very fine wood dust flies when finishing with fine sandpaper.
Step Two
Now we have two halves of the barrel, we need to carry out a cleaning procedure with them, but not only with the wooden part, but also with the metal, namely the rim. When cleaning, be careful not to overdo it with rough wood tools.
Step Three
To barrel, or rather the future coffee table quickly did not become worthless, you need to protect the surface from mechanical and other influences. It is best to protect the surface with a stain or varnish, apply a thin layer and let the material dry, for improvement it is necessary to repeat the operation a couple more times. Also does not forget to cover the barrel with metal parts. Now it remains to wait until the varnish or the stain has dried and you can proceed to the next step.
Step Four
Fixing the barrel is not so simple, so you need to make a special mount for this, which is cut out from the boards. First, note the curved lines that are equal to the diameter of the barrel that we use. we cut out the parts according to the marking, for this we use an electric jigsaw.
Step Five
For greater stability of the table as a whole, you need to make a partition from the board, which will stand perpendicular to the legs made earlier. We fix everything for self-tapping screws with a screwdriver.
Step Six
Using a tape measure, measure the length of the barrel and at the base we fasten another board, which should connect the legs to each other. It is best to fix it strictly in the center.
After the board is fixed, you need to carefully sand it all and you need to do it in several stages, starting from coarse grain, finishing with fine about 800. When the wooden parts are sanded, you need to cover their surface with varnish or stain at your discretion, you can also consider the option of oil treatment for wood, which also expresses texture and gives beauty to wood.
Seventh step.
But what kind of a coffee table is it if it does not have a countertop. It’s exactly what we’ll do now, with the help of a circular saw we cut the boards of the required length equal to the length of the barrel and glue together with wood glue. In order not to hold the parts while they are drying, we clamp them with clamps, the main thing is not to squeeze, so as not to leave a mark on the tree.
Step Eight.
For greater reliability of the table, namely the tabletops, it is necessary to fix the transverse beams from the bottom side, which will create a more solid frame and prevent the table from breaking along the glue line.
Step Nine.
Now for the table you need to build a frame. The slice of the boards should be at an angle of 45 degrees for joints with another board, and the frame should be the same size as the countertop and not go beyond it.
Step Ten
It is easy to give the wood a texture by grinding.
We sanded the frame and tabletop in stages to achieve a smooth surface, after which we varnish, stain and the like, and wait for complete drying.
After that, with the help of bolts and screws, we assemble the table in one piece. At the base we place a barrel, and to it and legs we attach a frame over which we fix the tabletop. In this way, the functionality of the table has increased, now small things can be stored in the same barrel
On this the coffee table is ready, the barrel now appears in a different role. Here's a way to give a second life to an unnecessary wine barrel.
