Stylish and trouble-free hunting knife

Today we will look at how to make a durable, high-quality, stylish hunting knife do it yourself. For its manufacture, the author used fairly common tools, the blade was cut out by a grinder, and all grinding work was carried out manually. The author used a belt sander only for a little handle processing.

On the metal part of the pen there is an interesting drawing resembling a plant, its author was carving files. Steel for the blade was used high-quality, it went through hardening. The author chopped a nail with a blade, and no trace was left on the blade. The handle in the front and back is reinforced with steel plates, which greatly increases the reliability of the knife.

If the project interests you, I propose to familiarize yourself with it in more detail.

Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
- high-quality steel for the blade;
- a tree for overlays;
- brass and steel rods (for pins);
- epoxy glue and black dye;
- sheet steel for the handle;
- oil for wood impregnation.

Tool List:
- grinder;
- drill;
- drilling machine;
- drill;
- belt sander;
- sandpaper;
- ;
- marker;
- vernier caliper;
- clamps;
- files for metal;
- a hacksaw;
- tools for hardening and oven.

The process of making a knife:

Step one. Cut the main profile
We prepare the template and cut the main profile from it. The template can be printed on a printer by finding an interesting layout on the Internet. And if you have a good imagination, you can draw a knife yourself. Cut out a paper template and circle on the blank. The author carries out cutting with a grinder.

Having cut out the main profile, we now need to remove all the irregularities that remained after cutting. Then a thick grinding disc for the grinder comes to the rescue. Using it, we bring the contour of the knife to a finished look.

Step Two Manual revision
First of all, we will form a notch on the blade. It will work as a stop, the knife will stop and you will not get a blow in your hand when cutting. In addition, with such a notch, the knife looks more interesting.

Next, it will be necessary to form the bevels, the author does this manually, using a special machine. You can make such a machine yourself or order it already ready from China. The same machine can sharpen the knife to the state of the blade. In order to work conveniently, we mark everything up first. The blade is not yet sharpened, because the blade has yet to be hardened.

Step Three Metal linings and handle refinement
On the handle of the knife in the front and rear there are metal plates. They make the knife beautiful, and the handle is very strong. Pairs of pads will be held on four pins each, so we drill corresponding holes for them. Nails can be used as pins.

We also cut out metal plates that are suitable in shape and size. They are not charmingly made of steel, aluminum, for example, will make the handle easier, and with brass it will look amazing.

To facilitate the handle, you need to drill a large number of holes in it. So we will remove the excess metal. In addition to lightening the holes, the handle sticks better.

Step Four Pen pattern and grinding
We put a drawing on the pen, here the author used files, round and triangular. First we do the marking with a caliper, and then a little patience and effort will bring the desired result.

In the end, it remains to polish the blade well, here we need fine sandpaper. We do not need to polish the blade yet, because we have yet to temper it.

Step Five Blade Heat Treatment
First, we temper the blade, for heating the author used a gas burner. The methods for hardening steel depend on its brand, but in most cases the steel is cooled in oil. The author warmed up the blade and lowered it into the oil, the pen was left without hardening, this is not necessary here.

After hardening, we check the blade, the author first tries to scratch it with a file, and then chop the nail with a knife. From such tests on the blade there are no marks left, which means that the blade is hardened well.

At the end, we release steel so that it acquires spring properties. Such a blade can withstand large bending loads. We send the blade into the oven for about 2 hours, it should warm up at a temperature of 200 ° C. The metal should become a straw color if the blade was sanded after hardening.

Step Six Grinding and polishing
We arm ourselves with fine emery paper and grind the blade with water. Thanks to water, the abrasive is well cleaned. At the end, we polish the blade, here the author used a drill with a polishing nozzle.

Seventh step. Pen assembly
We collect the handle, first of all, we install metal plates. For bonding we need epoxy glue. We glue everything together, tighten with clamps and leave to dry. Bonded surfaces are well degreased.

While the glue is drying, we will prepare wooden linings. We cut them so large that they fit tightly between the metal parts of the handle. We glue one half and drill holes for brass pins. The author used dye for epoxy glue to highlight the pattern. Next, we glue the second overlay, drill holes and hammer in brass pins on the glue. We wait until everything is completely dry.

Step Eight. Finishing touches
The glue has dried, now we grind the handle on a tape machine, and where we could not crawl, we work with a drill. At the end, grind the handle manually with sandpaper and saturate the wood with oil to protect it from moisture.

That's all, the knife is ready, it looks delicious, and yet it is strong and reliable! I hope you enjoyed the project, good luck and creative inspiration, if you decide to repeat it. Do not forget to share your ideas with us and homemade!
