How to cut wood without chips?

Hello dear readers and the inhabitants of our site!
In this article, Mark, the author of the YouTube channel "The Wood Whisperer" will tell you about how to avoid the effect of chips when cutting wood materials.

When cutting wood, it is important to avoid moments when the saw provokes the appearance of jagged along the edges of the cut. Jagged is what can happen when a blade of a kind carries wood fibers and wood chips.

Materials
- Boards.
Instruments, used by the author.
- A circular saw
- Saw blade Dadinator.
- Marking planer.

Manufacturing process.
To avoid this effect, craftsmen usually use teeth with zero clearance, and special protective stops that help hold the fibers. But there is a better way. Mark borrowed it from the old school methodology. This is what the author always does when he has to cross-cut wood.

Just at the moment, Mark is working on one project, so he has a great opportunity to show in practice how this method works.

Here is a very simple marking tool, the so-called marking planer. As you can see in the photo, it has a movable stop and a blade that allows you to mark the fibers. With a blade, the author draws a primary transverse incision of wood. Thus, by cutting the fibers to a shallow depth in advance, Mark prevents the saw from breaking and pulling the fibers. As a result, the cut is beautiful and clean.

The master simply draws a thicknesser blade along the edge and draws a very thin line. Now the device is configured for a fairly large spike - 105 mm. He performs the same operation on all four sides of the board.

Next, Mark sets up a DADO grooving saw blade, and during the cut he will use an angle meter with a metal partition. Naturally, the master would not want the saw to somehow hook the metal part of the measuring device.

He could have put a defensive stop in this place, but, according to Mark himself, he is lazy today. The author is going to make a cut on the workpiece, leaving it to sag over this open space. And the zero clearance is rather small.

Most of these Felisatti DADO groove inserts do not cover the disc very tightly. And yet, without any additional support, the author is going to make a cut along a pre-marked line.

And look: the cut is so clean and clear, as we expected to get it.

The master does not claim that this operation does not need a protective stop and a marking gage. They just need to have in your arsenal! But if for everything else you will also have the opportunity and ability to do such a trick, your results will always be amazing!

Mark cited just one example of how to apply the secrets of the old school, skillfully introducing them as a “pioneering” element into the traditional modern school of carpentry equipped with “heavy equipment”. This approach once again confirms the proverb that the new is the well-forgotten old.

The curious reader can find other examples of such borrowings and successful finds from Mark Spagnuolo's author's manual Hybrid Wood working by Marc Spagnuolo, which you can buy by going through.

All good mood, good luck, and follow safety precautions!
