Scythe knife

Hello!! Today we will make a knife from a scythe. The braid is made of good carbon steel. The knife from the braid holds the sharpening very well. And so we need a standard set of tools and of course the braid itself

So, draw on our spit with chalk the outlines of the future knife, draw on the tip of the tip as there is the strongest place.

We carefully cut the grinder along the drawn profile. It is necessary to cut carefully, without heating the workpiece, otherwise it will become soft

Then, on my round emery disk, I will polish the edges. I remove all the sharpness at the edges, grinding the plane of the blade with a rough abrasive

After that, we grind the 1000th sandpaper into the rough. The material is very difficult to handle

The next stage with the same paper we sharpen the blade. I have a Chinese sharpener for sharpening knives, it corrects very well. After it, I carefully grind it with sandpaper, otherwise it leaves burrs. The knife turned out as sharp as a razor

Next, I finally grind the knife on my, like, emery

Finally, it's time to make the handle, I thought about the material for a long time and plywood caught my eye, like this

The first thing I cut was two identical pieces of plywood

He tried on, began to drill, but the metal did not drill than he had not tried, it was necessary to carefully make holes by welding. Secured at first temporarily with screws

Looked, turned, even I did not like the future drawing of the handle

Next, I decided to go the other way. I decided to make a pen set of the same plywood. And so I disassembled everything and cut the handle, then I made a hairpin from 8mm wire, and in the second edge, along 1cm, I sawed

We insert our blade into the cut and flatten the edge to fix the blade. And at low currents we weld very carefully, since the metal is thin and we can ruin everything

Allow half an hour to cool. Next, I cut the plywood squares and drilled an 8mm hole in the center and tried on

Well, everything is adjusted, I begin to plant plywood, with each layer of plywood I coat with glue PVA so that the handle does not turn over time

After all, put the washer and twist the trailer. I have in his role a regular nut for thirteen. After I, with a small hacksaw, cut down all the excess on the sides

Everything, now we grind, betraying the shape we need. It’s better to wet the plywood, since the abrasive heats the plywood and it turns black, burned, like mine

Learn from mistakes, well, this is how the pen looks at this stage

Next, I made a nozzle on the drill and polished for a long time removing the burned wood

Here, somehow, in some places I had to grind my hands with sandpaper. Upon arrival, I rubbed the pen with natural wax and a felt piece rubbed the pen to shine. Next, after the degreaser, applied the nail polish to the blade of the knife and, after drying, applied the drawing with a needle. Then he diluted one to ten iron chloride for the weed of the boards and metal, and added the remaining solution after the weed of the printed circuit board, immersed in the solution for a day. From time to time, about once an hour, I wiped the metal with a cotton pad for better etching the pattern

Well, that's all friends, thanks for your time. Until new homemade!!!!!!

What a squalor ...

The idea is good, right. But the performance is purely utilitarian, aesthetics at C grade. For that it’s quite a working thing.
Well, it’s unlikely to be victorious, it’ll burn rather than drill, but diamond on the glass (tube) without problems. And yet it’s easier to punch a hole with a bolt and nut.

Winning drills can be drilled.

I didn’t make a knife))! But I did the knives from the old braids and I will do it) .. For there is no shortage of material and the relatives ask. Especially they use small- "vegetable" as I call them. I make holes for rivets with a grinder)) I will try to show ...
Who argues that knives from these brands have become better ("stainless steel" alloyed with chrome), but only where is her darling just to find? It was not easy to get it even in the "fat" Soviet years at the plant, then forging it, if it was a bar, I'm not talking about heat treatment. Knives certainly turned out cool, but where can a mere mortal find such steel? Buying in the store is too expensive, in the metal reception, so they know the brand there. A man made a knife from what can be found literally under his feet, and at least not from3. By the way, the steel of a mechanical saw (P6M5) also rusts and darkens, but no one calls knives from it bad.
P.S. To the knife does not rust they need to use.

The braids were made of U7 tool steel, the steel is not bad, but it rusts, it completely crosses out everything else. It is better to make it from stainless steel-40X13.65X13.95X18.
Today he cooked an old file.

Immediately in my head came the image of Charlie Chaplin in the "Gold Rush", as he cooked boots and ate-))))
By the way ... But is there carbon in cast iron? smiles
This is me to the fact that cast iron is perfectly cooked by hard electrodes (UONI1355, stainless steel, etc.)
It is only necessary to exclude cracking from a sharp temperature difference, smoothly warm it with a torch before arc welding ... But this is not the case ... It crackles or does not crack - it depends only on how sharply you warm it ... But cooked the same ...Do not solder ...
And your welded one is probably one of those who, if you ask which electrodes are better, replies: "Take green ones !! Green ones generally cook well!" xaxa Well ... or say: "" Monolith "and" Continent "are good! And" Plasma "is not very" ... (he called the manufacturers from the bulldozer))))
At the same time, it won’t take an interest in what kind of steel brand I’m going to cook ... And it won’t make it clear that the BRAND of the electrode is important, and not the manufacturer ... And, especially, it’s not the color of the coating.)))
You see ... Among these very often come across "clerks from God" who cook very, very high quality ... I met such ... Only now ... There should be an engineer nearby who knows the steel grades and knows how to select electrodes for them ...
Today he cooked an old file. Very well cooked. There is almost no scale ... Exactly the seam lies, nothing burns ...
Uh ... There is no carbon?
Guest Vladimir
In general, high-carbon steel does not boil well, it is more likely to be soldered (what is the difference between soldering and welding, I hope you know), it explained to me as welded. On the braid can not be high carbon steel, because it is beaten off, i.e. they make hardening, and then they only rule in the process. Once I did a knife, their braids are thin.
Guest Ivan
stupid thing to do with a knife. Spend 500 rubles do not press.
Guest Alexander
Knife made for what purpose? There is no description of how the blade holds, how metal behaves in an aggressive environment! Write a conclusion about the advisability of turning the braids into a multiplier.
So I didn’t seem to write in the style of "It's nonsense!" and "Throw it out, do not disgrace!" smiles
After all, everyone once started with something.)))
It is commendable if you like it ...
And it is very commendable that you constructively evaluate advice, and not "get in the blank protection", like many ...))))
And the rest will work out and follow ...
Good luck ...
P.S. And the scythe anyway, sorry! )))))
Zase
The idea is good, but the result is terrible. So much time and effort to get such a terrible knife, which is better not to show anyone

Thank you very much for your opinion. I listened to your opinion. I only study and every opinion is a lesson for me.
Well, what can I say ...
Something a person does ... Already good ...
But why spit something? ))) My hand would not rise ...
And on execution ...
Grinding ... NO HER! ... Well, I'm sorry ... I think that’s why you mutilated the blade with "child" etching ...
... Welding and knife !!!! And then without hardening ...))) .. Well, well ...
No, it will cut ... Steel is so in a braid .. Just "leave" sharpening will be the moment ...
For the future ... Even if you cut the steel with a grinder, which you will not then heat, then you need to put water next to it, and then after every second of the cut (literally !!!), cool in water. Especially if the steel is thin. And if you need to cook, cover the blade with an uncleaned wet rag or sponge as much as possible, and after a quick “drop”, immediately press on the rag (sponge) and throw it through it and throw it into the water.
By the way, you really tried in vain to drill a hole in the spit ... But to punch with a punch - as simple as that ... With one blow of the hammer ... How to send two bytes!)))))
Chinese knife sharpener corrects! But does not sharpen !! In your case, it helped that it was originally thin.
Well, a bit of humor:
on your round emery disc

Damn ... And I have all the drives - square ... smiles
. Well ... sho knew - then told.)))
Good luck ...
