Hatchet from an automobile part

I welcome fans to knock on red-hot pieces of iron, today we will manufacture a small hatchet. Homemade made by forging, everything is done with simple tools, work is carried out by craftsmen from Cambodia. The starting material is the part from the CV joint of the car (or similar). You can take such a hatchet with you on a hike; it is compact, not heavy, and convenient. If the project interests you, I propose to study it in more detail!

Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
- a piece of carbon steel (the author used the part from the car);
- bar or board for the handle;
- carpentry glue;
- oil for wood impregnation (preferably).

Tool List:
- forging furnace, hammer and other blacksmithing tools;
- with a grinding disk and a disk nozzle for sandpaper;
- a circular saw;
- planing machine;
- file.

Ax manufacturing process:

Step one. Blacksmithing work
The main work is carried out by forging, for starters we heat up the source material, in our case it is a part from a CV joint of a car or similar. After warming up the workpiece, by chopping we cut off one small piece, and from it we will make an hatchet.

Well, then everything is simple, we heat up the workpiece red-hot and delay the desired profile. With a little effort, and right before our eyes, the workpiece turns into a recognizable ax profile.

At the end of the process, we need to make a hole in the ax under the ax. Here we need a special wedge, the author also made an iron ax for such purposes, on which he forms a hole of the desired shape and size. As a result, we get a ready-made ax, which needs only a little refinement.

Step Two Grinding
After forging, the ax must be sanded to remove defects after forging. We clamp the workpiece in a special tool, and install a thick grinding disc on the grinder. We walk along the contour, and also remove gross defects on the planes. Final processing is carried out by a nozzle on which emery paper is installed.We carefully treat the blade so as not to overheat the steel, otherwise alloying additives may burn out. The author gently smooths the blade with a file, it should not be sharpened before hardening, as the metal will overheat.

Step Three Quenching
We begin to harden the hatchet, the author only hardens the blade, as a result, it turns out to be durable, and the ax itself retains a certain plasticity. We heat the blade red-hot, and then only lower the blade into the water. After hardening, the blade can be sharpened, for this the author uses a grinding stone.

Step Four A pen
We make a handle, here we need a piece of a bar or board of the desired thickness. The author cuts the workpiece with a circular saw and then planes to obtain an approximate shape. Next, we make the adjustment of the handle with the help of a grinder using a disk nozzle for sandpaper.

The handle can be installed, it is useful to wedge it with wood glue, so everything will hold very tightly.

The hatchet is ready, it remains to grind it with fine sandpaper, it is recommended to impregnate the handle with oil so that it does not absorb water and does not deform. With this hatchet it is convenient to chop wood chips, chop woods, sharpen sticks and much more. The project can be considered successfully completed, I hope you liked the homemade product. Good luck and creative inspiration, if you decide to repeat this. Do not forget to share your ideas and homemade things with us!
