Homemade manufacturing process:
Step one. Cut the sickle profile
Any such project should begin with the manufacture of the template, we take a sheet of paper and draw sketches of the sickle with a pencil. To save metal, the author takes into account the bending of the disk and the hole.
The template is cut out of paper and outlined with a marker on the material. Everything, you can start cutting, the author works with a grinder. When cutting problems should not arise.
Next, we finalize the template, we need to bring the circuit to the ideal. We install a thick grinding disc on the grinder and get to work. It’s impossible to creep into a grinder, we work with files or a drill.
At the end, we form a bevel on the blade, it should be only on one side. This author makes an eye grinder with a grinding disc.
Step Two Heat treatment
When the workpiece is finished, steel can be hardened. The blade before hardening cannot be sharpened, otherwise the steel will overheat. We heat the knife until a bright red glow and immerse in oil. To avoid deformations, cracks and other problems, it is advisable to preheat the oil.
If hardening is successful, the sickle will no longer be taken with a file, and when you hit it, a ringing will be heard.Now the steel needs to be let go, otherwise the sickle will be brittle and may break if dropped. We send the sickle into the oven and warm at a temperature of about 200 ° C for an hour or two. Typically, the steel after this procedure becomes a straw color, but it all depends on the grade of steel.
That's all, if all the procedures are done correctly and the steel is of high quality, we have an excellent sickle that will not go dull for a long time. We perform manual sanding with sandpaper and water.
Step Three Pattern
The author applied an interesting pattern to the sickle, here we need a belt sander or a grinder with a thick grinding disc. We make indentations throughout the sickle, the pattern resembles the one that is formed during forging.
Next, we proceed to etching to highlight the pattern. Immerse the sickle in the reagent and wait until it turns black.
Next, the acid must be neutralized in soda and at the end, wash my sickle well. We perform wet grinding of the sickle with fine sandpaper, as a result, we get a beautiful drawing. The sickle is almost ready and you can already perform the primary sharpening on a tape machine.
Step Four Lining
We make lining for the sickle, the author uses the material G10 for this, it looks gorgeous and has a beautiful pattern. We cut two pads with a hacksaw or a jigsaw, and then we finish them with a file. On the overlays you need to make exactly such recesses, as on the blade, so that the patterns are in harmony with each other. We work on a tape machine, and then cover the lining with wax or varnish.
Step Five Assembly
The sickle can be assembled, we install the pads on the handle, they are fastened with decorative screws and nuts, no glue is required. The sickle is ready, it looks great. As an experiment, the author is sharpening a stick. If desired, the sickle can be sharpened to the state of the blade.
