Hello to all the lovers of craftsmen, today we will make a knife, or rather a wood cutter for working on a lathe. The author has an improvised lathe, it is made of a drill, the author also decided to make a cutter himself. The source material for the knife was an old metal file. The manufacturing process is quite simple and does not require special skills and tools. The cutter copes with the task perfectly and does not stupid for a long time. The only drawback of such a tool is that the steel quickly rusts, so the cutter must be stored in a dry place and regularly lubricated.

Homemade manufacturing process:
Step one. Grinding
First of all, we need to polish the old file well to a shine. We will not temper homemade work, so during production it is impossible to prevent overheating of the file. We clamp the file in a vice, and on the grinder we install a thick grinding disk. Getting started, in the process of grinding the file is constantly watered with water so that the metal does not overheat. In this way, the author polished all sides of the file.
Step Two Cutting part
The cutting part of the knife is its nose, it must be sharpened at an acute angle. We mark everything with a marker and proceed to cutting. The author’s file is quite narrow, so it took a little work. Note that this part of the cutter is the most critical and during cutting it will be the most heated. We work slowly, constantly use water for cooling. At the end, we trim the cutting point with a thick grinding disc.
Step Three Fine grinding
We perform fine grinding of the knife, for this the author used Japanese water stone. Thanks to this approach, we will align the plane of the knife well. The grinding stone is constantly watered with water, so it will be cleaned of dirt.
Using a fine emery stone, align and sharpen the nose of the incisor. At the end, we wind the tip of the knife with masking tape so as not to get hurt in the future.
Step Four Handle
We make the handle of the knife, for this first you will need to drill holes for the pins. If you do not let go of steel, for drilling you will need special drills with carbide tips. Next, we need a piece of board for overlays, cut two blanks, drill holes, and then stick will stick together. For bonding you will need epoxy glue. In order not to glue the blade with adhesive, wrap it with masking tape. We tighten the handle with clamps and let the glue dry.
Step Five Completion and testing
At the end of the handle, you need to give the final profile, for this we work with sandpaper, files or other available tool. At the end, the handle is well sanded with sandpaper for a smooth state.
That's all, now the knife is ready, it remains to soak the linings with oil so that they do not get dirty and do not absorb water. The knife looks great, you can test. The author works with the cutter quite confidently, the cutting part of the cutter does not bend, the steel is strong.
