Forged knife for carving wood from the suspension spring

Hello lovers to craft, today we will consider how to make a knife for woodcarving. To manufacture homemade the author approached quite responsibly, rather serious equipment was used here. The blade is made by forging, and the piece of the spring from the car served as the starting material. The knife turned out quite sharp, it cuts wood quite easily. The author also managed to harden steel; even a file does not take it. If you are interested in the project, I propose to study it in more detail!

Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
- spring from the suspension of the car;
- a tree for the handle;
- sheet copper;
- oil for wood.

Tool List:
- belt sander;
- tape cutting machine;
- drill;
- oven and blacksmith tool;
- oven;
- grinder;
- vise;
- clamps;
- whetstones.

Homemade manufacturing process:

Step one. Template
First of all, the author decided to make a reliable template, since he planned to make several knives. First, we make a drawing on paper and transfer it to sheet metal. Well, then the author cut out a sheet metal template, aluminum or other metal, which can be easily cut, is also suitable. The author cut the blade with a hacksaw, then it remains only to finish it with a file.

Step Two Forging
Next, cut a piece from the spring and proceed to forging, the author uses a gas furnace, it is made of a cylinder. Well, then we work with a hammer and form approximate knife blanks, the size profile should be slightly larger than the template. The author also puts a mark on each blade.

Step Three Blade revision
The blade must be modified in accordance with the template, excess metal can be cut off if there is a lot of it. If there is not much work, then we work with a belt sander. At the end of the work, we form the slopes on the knife, for this you need a special holder, you also need to set the correct angle. The smoother the descents, the better the knife will cut.

Step Four Quenching
You can begin hardening, heat the blade to a temperature of 820-850 ° C and lower it into oil. After that, we definitely check whether it turned out to harden steel. Hardened steel will ring when struck by it, and also a file will not take it. If such characteristics are not observed, the blade must be heated more strongly, a magnet in a red-hot state should not be attracted to steel.

After hardening, it is imperative to make steel leave so that it is not fragile. Usually a domestic oven is used for this, the temperature should be a little over 200 ° C. In the process of heating, the steel will become straw-colored, then the blade can be removed.

Step Five Rough sharpening
After hardening, you can make a rough sharpening of the blade, the author uses a belt grinder with fine sandpaper for this. We also lightly grind the plane of the blade, now it looks amazing.

Step Six Handle
We make a handle for the knife, its author cut out using a tape cutting machine and a special holder. The pen turned out to be an interesting multifaceted form. In front of the handle you need to grind a seat on the lathe for installing the copper ring.
Drill a hole along the handle along the diameter of the knife shank. We also cut a gap in the front part, thanks to which the copper ring will reliably compress the blade shaft.

Seventh step. Crimp ring
We make a crimp ring for the handle, its author decided to make copper sheet, drill a hole, and then cut the excess with a hacksaw for metal. We adjust the crimping ring under the nose of the handle, grind the parts together.
The author released the shank of the knife so that it could be riveted.

Step Eight. Knuckle and knife assembly
The author also made the back of the sheet of copper, the source material was a copper tube. As a result, we should get a washer with a rectangular hole in the shape of a shank. We collect the knife, set the back, and expand the tip of the shank. If desired, you can additionally use glue for gluing the handle on the shank, but in any case everything will hold very tightly.

In the end, after careful grinding, we impregnate the handle with oil to protect it from dirt, now everything looks amazing. We sharpen the blade of the blade with the help of Japanese water stones, as a result, our knife is sharpened to the state of the blade. Homemade perfectly cuts wood, which was required to prove. On this project is over, I hope you liked the homemade. Good luck and creative inspiration, if you decide to repeat this. Do not forget to share your ideas and homemade things with us!
