Hello to everyone who likes to craft unusual things. Today we will look at how to make an unusual caterpillar motorcycle. Such a transport does not have any additional wheels, there is only one caterpillar, which is a "unicycle". For homemade the author adapted, and a cut tire from a large-diameter automobile wheel acts as a caterpillar. Homemade manufacturing process:
Step one. Track Making
To make a caterpillar, you need a large-diameter car tire. The author cuts out the side parts of the tire using a vibration saw. As a result, we get a great finished track.
Step Two Drive wheel
Next, we make the drive wheel, the author used an aluminum pipe with a bottom as a material. Of course, it will be difficult to find such a part, you can simply use a piece of steel pipe, and weld the bottom with a piece of plate.
The main task is to make a hole in the center clearly for the installation of the axis flange, then a lathe will come to the rescue. In addition, it is important to make the wheel narrow at the edges, as a result, the caterpillar will itself be centered on the wheel. As a result, the author installed a flange on the drive wheel, through which the wheel is attached to the axis of the engine, on which the scooter wheel is mounted. The assembled structure can be tried on a caterpillar to figure out what the frame should be.
Step Three Driven wheels (rollers)
Now we have to make the driven wheels for our tank, they should look like rollers.To make such wheels, you will need a steel pipe of suitable diameter, bearings need to be installed in the pipe, which can be made of pipes of smaller diameter. The author tried hard enough to make the rollers, they turned out to be rounded at the edges, as a result the caterpillar will not wear out, and will be well centered. On one of the wheels you need to install a flange on which a disc brake from a moped or motorcycle is installed.
Step Four Frame and assembly
We assemble the frame for homemade work, the most difficult part is the front of the frame. The frame is welded in the form of a semicircle and there are three rollers on it. The front semicircular part of the frame is telescopically connected to the motor, this makes it possible to pull the track. As materials, the author used profile pipes and sheet steel.
As for the lower part of the frame, it is attached to the main part pivotally and through shock absorbers. The author installs 4 pieces of a small shock absorber from a moped, as a result, the car should cope well with irregularities, but you need to optimally adjust the stiffness.
Step Five Seat
We make a home-made seat, the author welded it from sheet metal and a round pipe. Of course, the chair is made rather brutally, there is no lining here. The seat is bolted to the main part of the frame.
Step Six Gas tank
We make a gas tank for homemade work, as the basis for the body, the author adapted a piece of a round pipe. We drill a hole in it and set the neck. As a neck, the author adapted a copper pipe with a nut for plumbing. A cap can be used as a cap for this pipe, but do not forget to make a hole for the release of excess pressure from the tank.
We weld the ends of the pipe, and also weld the bracket for attaching the gas tank. In the end, it remains to drill holes and cut the thread under the fittings of the gas pipeline.
Seventh step. Painting and assembly
We paint all the details of the frame and the machine can be assembled. At the end, the author also made a steering wheel for the tank and the steps, and to be able to ride in the dark, install the headlights. The engine starts through the starter, on the frame there is a special place for installing the battery.
In addition, it is also recommended to make protective arches on the sides so that they protect the legs and nodes of the machine when falling to one side.
That's all, the homemade product is ready, you can refuel and experience. On the asphalt, the homemade ride is quite interesting, the stability is quite good. The only thing that remains unclear is how such a homemade product will turn.
Also interested in the issue of off-road patency, especially snow. Most likely, the homemade product will fall to one side and you will need to make additional side wheels.
