In this article, Zach, the author of the YouTube channel “Workshop Edits”, presents to you his simple project - making a wooden scallop.
Materials
This homemade product is quite simple to manufacture, and can be repeated using classic hand tools.
- Wood of maple, hazel, and mahogany
- PVA glue

- Jigsaw, scissors, pencil.
Manufacturing process.
For this homemade work, the master uses trimmed boards from maple, Brazilian hazel, and African mahogany wood.
First, Zack polishes all the edges of the boards on a belt sander.
Then he cuts them with a hand jigsaw along the length, up to about 270-300 mm.
Then glue is applied to the workpieces, and is leveled with a plastic spatula.
All three parts are pulled together by clamps, and left until the glue hardens completely. At this point, the author made one mistake. The fibers of the future handle and the back of the product are located along it, this is the right decision. But the maple blank, which then becomes the scallop teeth, is not located correctly. Its fibers should be perpendicular. Otherwise, the teeth will break.
The author passes the dried workpiece through the thicknesser, aligning the plane.
The result is these two blanks, from which you can cut excellent scallops.
The next step, the master transfers the shape of the scallop to the tree, using a simple template.
A layer of contact aerosol adhesive is applied to the workpiece, and the template is attached on one side of the workpiece.
But the scallop also has a handle. Therefore, the author slightly modifies the shape of the ridge, adapting it to his own idea.
Now he clamps a wooden piece in a vice in the hope of trying to cut the teeth by hand with a jigsaw.
But this threatens to turn into too long a process, therefore, the author changes tactics, and resortes to the help of a band saw. Now everything goes like clockwork! Even with little experience working on this machine, the master will easily perform this work, the author assures.
Next, Zack proceeds to grinding. First, it wipes all surfaces, and then transgresses to rounding all the edges, achieving a soft, rounded shape.
Then he begins to cone the scallop tines themselves.Although they are made of hard wood, the master works with them very carefully, for fear of breaking.
At the same time, the manual clip provides him with good service; it helps to properly press the surfaces to the sanding belt at the right angle.
After that, the comb is clamped again in a vice, and the gaps between the teeth are treated with 80 grit sandpaper. It will take time, but it acts like meditation.
The rough processing is followed by a thin one: first wet grinding, then again dry with 220th and 320th sandpaper.
In conclusion, the author applies mineral oil to the product in order to develop a woody pattern and protect the product from moisture.
Other oils and impregnations may also be used. For example, linseed, or rosehip oil. The second is characterized by an almost complete absence of smell.
By the way, in one of the articles Vladimir Natynchik proposed a wonderful impregnation recipe for wood from natural beeswax and rosehip oil. Such impregnation can even be applied to products that come in contact with food.
When the oil has absorbed and dried, the comb will be ready for use. Here is the beauty in the end turned out.
