DIY soldering iron

Good day to all the residents of our sites. Many hams face such a problem as soldering small parts when the soldering iron becomes large compared to the size of the microcircuit. Few people know that this problem can be solved by making your own soldering iron for microcircuits. In this article I will tell you how to make this miracle soldering iron, which will appeal to every radio amateur.

In the work of a radio amateur, one has to “make friends” with a soldering iron, but when its dimensions become uncomfortable you need to look for a way out of this problem. The problem is solved by creating a soldering iron for microcircuits do it yourself.

To create a soldering iron by homemade applies fairly simple details, in most cases every radio amateur has them.

Namely this:
• MLT (its power is 0.5-2 watts), Resistance is from 5 to 10 Ohms.
• A piece of double-sided PCB, size 3 * 1 cm.
• A piece of steel wire, approximately 0.8 mm in diameter.
• Copper wire, (you can remove it, for example, from the computer's power supply), it will serve as a soldering iron tip.
• Any ballpoint pen that you like is needed for the soldering iron body.

We begin assembly, it is necessary to remove the protective varnish and paint from the resistor, to reduce the time of fuss with this matter, you can heat the resistor.

The next step. We cut off one of the contacts of the resistor, in its place we make a hole with a small drill. After the hole is ready to be seen that the resistor itself is further drilled, it was the Soviet resistors that were made in imported ones. The other end of the resistor will be connected to a power source and at the same time serve as a mount on the handle.

Next, you need to expand the hole of the resistor, at its beginning make a large drill bit so that the sting does not touch the walls of the resistor, a second power contact will be soldered to this place.

This contact can be made, for example, from iron wire, in this case, the author of the homemade product uses a spring taken from a metal plug.

It should be well tinned, the ring made in its middle should turn out a little smaller in diameter of the resistor so that it fits tightly on the ring.

We make a PCB board, double-sided, its front part is wide, with two contacts for our wire with a ring, soldered to a resistor, medium for fastening in the handle housing and the narrowest to solder the power wires.

Let's start assembling the soldering iron in one piece.First, we put a wire with a ring on the resistor from the side of the hole, having previously tinned these parts, we solder them.

Solder the power contacts to our circuit board.
Now you need a soldering iron tip, this will help the copper wire before installing it; you need to put some piece, for example, of the same ceramic in the resistor case, so that the tip does not close the resistor with its second contact.

The sting can be made of any shape convenient for use, you just need to bend it as you need, for more contacts of microcircuits you can flatten the sting.

The soldering iron is almost ready, it remains to screw the case on the board and solder the wires to the power source, they can be any 15 volt block with a current of 1 ampere. Soldering with such a soldering iron is much more convenient than oversized, it sits comfortably in your hand, it feels like you are writing with a pen, in fact, you have a soldering iron in your hand, its advantages include both the small size of the tip and the soldering iron itself, as well as its weight compared to the usual it is about three times lighter. All successful homemade and repetitions made by the author.
