A cute coffee table can be made from an old wooden chest equipped with a flat lid. Thus, you will breathe new life into an old unnecessary thing and get a unique piece of furniture as a result of your work.
To make such an original table you will need the following materials and tools:
• a wooden chest suitable in shape and size;
• long screws;
• wooden blocks;
• drill or screwdriver;
• fine-grained sandpaper;
• paint remover for wood:
• Sander;
• brass brush;
• varnish for wood;
• masking tape;
• liquid polyurethane;
• metal furniture fittings.
Operating procedure
Step 1. Carefully clean the chest from dirt and dust. Wipe it thoroughly inside and out.
Step 2. From four wooden blocks, cut four equal-sized legs. For greater decorativeness, you can give the legs the shape of a truncated pyramid. Turn the chest over and at the bottom with a pencil outline the locations of the legs. Be sure to double-check the correct layout and only then screw the legs to the bottom of the chest with screws.
Step 3. Remove old paint from the boards from which the chest is assembled. Use for this some special tool designed to remove paints and varnishes from wooden surfaces.
Step 4. Grind all the wooden surfaces of the chest. After such preliminary preparation with fine-grained emery paper, finish polishing the wood.
Step 5. To understand how the finished product will look, try finishing one of the sides of the chest. Polish the brass parts, cover the selected varnish boards and look at the result. If it suits you well, continue to work.
Step 6. Clean all remaining metal parts of the chest. As a rule, braces on old chests are made of brass.Such brackets should be cleaned with a brass brush, since a brush made of another, harder metal leaves gross scratches on soft brass.
Step 7. Process the brass parts with fine-grained sandpaper.
Step 8. Varnish all wooden surfaces and put the chest to dry for a couple of days.
Step 9. After the varnish has dried, cover the entire chest, including the brass parts, with two layers of liquid polyurethane. Allow the polyurethane coating to dry.
Step 10. If necessary, replace the handles and lock on the chest.
The unique coffee table is completely ready!
