Hello to all lovers homemade. Currently cold weapons it is widely developed and its production has occupied a large niche, in particular, fans of all kinds of knives and real connoisseurs have appeared. In this article I will describe how the author did do it yourself hilt, which is distinguished by its originality, as it includes two species of wood. Such a homemade product will decorate any knife and add value to it, since everything is made up of little things.
In order to make a homemade handle you need:
* Blade of a knife, in this home-made product heat-treated steel ШХ-15 is applied
* Mahogany and oak
* Copper rod or aluminum for rivets
* Vacuum drying oil, wax
* Electric fret saw
* Manual milling cutter with copy cutter
* Clamps
* Joiner glue
* Plywood
That's all the materials and tools that are needed to create this handle.
Now you can start the phased assembly.
Step one.
First you need to make a template on which the knife handle will be made.
After that, we make a sketch of the future handle on plywood with a thickness of 8 mm and draw the place of the junction of two types of wood. Using a jigsaw, we cut plywood at the junction, this is our template, according to which the main parts of the handle will be made.
When working with a power tool, be careful and do not forget about personal protective equipment, such as glasses and gloves.
Step Two
Now the template can be used for its intended purpose, the upper one is applied to mahogany, the lower one is applied to the oak blank, after which we make the markup.
Before sawing, make a margin of about two centimeters along the length of each of the workpieces for further processing.
Step Three
Armed with an electric jigsaw, we cut the part according to the template with an indent of 2 mm.
We fix the workpiece with the template with the help of screws, after which we fasten everything to the table. Now it’s up to the milling cutter, with its help it is necessary to adjust the exact dimensions of the workpiece with the template, a copy milling cutter will help. Using a manual milling cutter for carbon paper, we make the surface as on a template, as a result, you should get a smooth cut without scoring, which directly depends on the quality of the cutter.
Step Four
After all the parts are ready to proceed to gluing them, for this we need carpentry glue. We smear the parts and press them with clamps until the glue finally dries.
Step Five
From the glued blanks, we cut out the shape of the handle, two of them will be needed, since they will be on both sides.We attach this handle to the blade of the knife with the help of aluminum rivets, which are installed in the holes on the handle and then riveted with a hammer. Finishing is coating the tree with linseed oil or other protective components, such as oil.
This knife has a blade with a beautiful pattern, which is made using glued oracal leaves, after which the blade is carefully sandblasted.
As a result, we got such a handle for a knife, its original appearance was well embellished by the knife itself, and this method, in my opinion, deserves attention and takes place on collection knives or knives for everyday use, whether it’s kitchen or camping.
