Steel wire carpet beater

Hello. Today we will talk about how you can make the thing you need in the household out of unnecessary pieces of steel wire. Namely - a beater for carpets!

Personally, I think that such a household item as a knocker for carpets, as well as the process of knocking them out, is an anachronism! smiles . Not to mention the fact that the carpets themselves are now not as widespread as before - on the walls they have long been gone ...

And with the high suction power of modern vacuum cleaners, you do not need to knock out carpets at all! Moreover, carpets made of natural wool have sunk into oblivion, which were very electrified and pulled dust into themselves like a magnet !!! And, plus to this, thanks to very strongly curved fibers, they "gave" it poorly ... But modern synthetics are weakly electrified and do not hold dust ....

By the way, for example, such an action as “take out carpets for freshness in the snow” has a purely psychological implication! Well, snow can’t pull the dust out of the carpet! Our visual perception is to blame, when we then see a dirty track in white snow, we think, "That’s how much dirt would remain if I didn’t!" (Although, this dirt would have remained in a vacuum cleaner, and not in the carpet!)))). Plus, there are subconscious associations in our brains: "White snow - frost - freshness - purity !!" ....

And, nevertheless, many people believe that a broken carpet is still cleaner than a carpet cleaned with a vacuum cleaner.
And my wife is one of them, unfortunately .... scratch So I have to periodically collect carpets from the floor, take them out into the yard, throw them over the crossbar and .... knock for a look! )))). Because, before that, I thoroughly vacuumed them from both sides ... dance3 So, how many are not knocking - dust does not come from them! ))))

But .. Nevertheless, I have to perform this procedure ... in the name of Love! xaxa scratch shok

But back to our knockers ... On sale there are still a great many. And they cost mere pennies, as they are made of cheap plastic ... But this is the catch! They break easily !! And especially in the winter! At sub-zero temperatures, plastic hardens, loses flexibility and easily breaks due to many strong and biting blows ...

Of course, you can easily buy another ... But, after all, a thing is needed exactly when it is needed !!! And, somewhat completing the process with a broken beater, we carry the carpet home, throwing out the unwanted tool along the way ...
And safely forget about this episode !!! smile

The time comes for another knockout.Carpets are already folded. We begin to look for a knocker ... And only then we remember that it is not there !!! ...
And then you have to drop everything and go to the nearest store for a new one ... (Yes, and this day, usually Saturday!)))). And, considering that at the same time we still have to “listen” .... (A familiar situation, right?)))))

And so, considering all this, I decided to make a reliable metal knocker, which certainly will never crash !!! As they say, once - and for life !!! The prototype was a classic knocker, which I spied in the hands of Freken Bock:
Steel wire carpet beater

This form is easy to recreate from steel wire! (I guess that in the "pre-plastic era" all these tools were exclusively of this shape for the same reason ... After all, plastic has existed recently, and carpets - a very long time!))))).

So, here is what I needed for this:

1. Steel wire with a diameter of 3 mm
2. Knitting wire with a diameter of 0.8 mm.
3. Isolate and (or) shrink cambric.
4. A piece of chipboard and wood screws (for making a template).
5. Enamel in the spray can.

I started by making a template. To do this, I found in my stocks a piece of laminated particleboard:

After that, I drew a future product on it in a 1: 1 scale.

At the “key points” of the bends, I screwed in screws with a length of 35 mm so that they remained sticking out at half their length:

All! The template is ready! You can proceed directly to the product ..
I decided to make it from scraps of red-hot steel wire .. I don’t even remember where they came from in my scrap metal ...

This wire with a diameter of 3 mm ... It should be taken thinner .. But I have this one, but no thinner one !!! (That is, there is. But all of it is soft. And I needed a red-hot, springy!) This was the decisive factor in the choice of material ... It was rusty, but on hard red-hot steel rust, usually only superficial. And I easily cleaned it with sandpaper, and then wiped it with a rag with gasoline.
From this wire, I bent one after another the elements of my knocker:

He worked with his hands, pliers, pliers .... Everything that was at hand ...
By the way, it is very convenient to bend the wire with the key from the grinder:

At the same time, I made the first two elements with double “tails”, which should form the shaft of the handle. And then, realizing that a bundle of seven wires would be enough to provide the desired level of stiffness, he made the remaining elements "one-sided", leaving only one long end:

When all the elements were curved and inserted into their places, I tightly tied them together at the intersection with a thin knitting wire, which I always have in the form of shortly cut bundles. (By the way, I advise. It is very convenient to have this at hand. It often helps).

Cut off the excess:

And he tightly bent the protruding twists into those places where they can’t cling to anything:

The “core” of the handle itself was also tied with knitting wire on top, and then tightly wrapped with electrical tape over the entire length!

The ends of the wire were cut off by a grinder, leaving one long. I bent it 180 degrees, making a loop:

All. The design is tightly bonded. You can remove it from the template ...
Which I did by unscrewing half the screws:

Let's start decorating. Under the arm came a spray of blue paint, which remained from painting the pipe bender. I took advantage of it:

The rod turned out to be thin, therefore, for convenience, I decided to make the handle from a piece of pipe made of cross-linked polyethylene, which caught my eye.

I put it on the rod

Now it was necessary to fix it at the end of the handle. To do this, I cut two pieces of the same wire along the length of the tube and hammer inside:

They tightly wedged the tube on a wire bundle ...
The rest of the handle, wrapped in electrical tape, I also did not particularly like, so I decided to decorate it with a heat shrink tube. (I often use it in homemade. It is very comfortable. Therefore, I always have stocks of such cambric in different colors and diameters in my workshop):

That's all ... Almost done ... The most important thing remains: ROPE !!!
After all, each of us remembers how, taking out the carpets, we "do not have enough hands" to beat out !! We usually try to shove it inside a carpet twisted into a tube ... Then, when we carry it, it strives to fly out ... This happens already in the yard, when we carry out the twisting horizontally, the carpet is bent under its weight, and its ends hang .... And we, although we see this, we are already bringing the carpet to the bench, or the horizontal bar, and we return for a beater lying on the ground ...))))

And so, to exclude this, I remembered the ingenious invention of one of the users of this forum !!!
Rope !! Surely!!!

It can be made from any piece of cord. But I used the finished one. (I have a whole bunch of these - I once bought on Ali-Express due to the extremely low price and high potential demand:

Now the knocker will be easy to carry along with the carpets, and you will not need to look with your eyes where to put it, if you need to fix the carpet that has been removed during knocking ...

That's all! The beater is ready! I hope this will not break in the cold. And I won’t have to buy anymore ...

Finally, a few tips for those who will repeat ... Take the wire, if possible, thinner ... Two millimeters will be enough. The product turned out to be heavier than plastic. Not very heavy, it’s quite normal for a man’s hand ... But women would be better off ...

Or, you can make not five elements, like mine, but three - like Freken Bock! ))))

Give two. Need to repeat, so many plastic has broken already.
