Hello everybody
I was always attracted by Damascus, its pattern, originality. I read a lot about damask steel, how it is received, what types are. It always seemed to me that it was all hard and unreal for me. Somehow I tried forging a rope and laminate a couple of times, but nothing worked. Somehow I came across a video on how to make a knife from cables from a motorcycle in a pipe and I decided to do the same.
We will need
- Bulgarian
- Horn
- A piece of pipe or square 25mm
- Rope and winding
- Set of sandpaper, grinder
- Metal chips or cement
Training.
I have a little cable, and there was no tube, I took a rectangle. 50mm to 25mm. The cables should be clean, the tube is peeled from the inside, covered with a marker for painting the pen. That's what I found.
Alternating as you like, tightly hammer the profile. We also put a cable into the winding. Where my cable is not tight, I shove segments of soft and steel thin wire. After I rammed everything up, I collected metal shavings with a magnet, where I saw it with a grinder, burn it with a torch so that the shavings were clean, but not very differently it would become scale, and this is not good. I fall asleep shavings in profile, tap on the sides for ramming, and fall asleep until there are no voids. After driving the sawdust, I weld the lid and handle. That's all our semi-finished product is ready.
Forging
During the forging I did not shoot, there was very little time, I will describe everything like this. I heat the hearth on coal, after a good warm-up I put the package in the center of fire, the main thing is to monitor the uniform heating of the package. There is no special attention as for forging an open, multi-layer package, here.
I wait until the package heats up thoroughly because for blacksmithing you need 1200-1100 ° C. Tired of standing, I sat down to smoke, a couple of minutes later the sparks flew in different directions from the fire of the hearth, as sparks flew, I throw a cigarette, run to the hearth, pick up the packet and see that the whole packet sparks, which means it's time. I run to the anvil and forge the biggest hammer that I have. I’m kicking from all sides, and when the bag cools down to red, I again put the bag into the fire and heat it the same way as the first time, and I forge again. So three times and my package became flat. With forging everything. With a grinder, I cut off the edges of the package, delete the remaining profile.
Edges with lack of fusion, but the center seems to be welded.I cut off all the excess, form the shape of the blade. I grind a little, when grinding I found two small defects, I probably loosely scored the chips, and as a whole even nothing here is a rough draft photo.
Grinding The drawing is beautiful, for the first time I normally proceed to sanding with large to small sand paper. There is nothing special to write about this point.
Quenching and vacation Quenching takes place at 900-950 ° C, during heating I check with a magnet, dip in oil heated to 30 ° C. Immediately send the knife into the oven for 4 hours at 200 ° C. I let it cool myself with the oven. After the vacation, I grind in the mirror again. I didn’t have enough goy paste, so I didn’t finish it.
Slightly etched in iron chloride for about 20 minutes and polish again. On the right side of the picture a little less, probably more sawdust.
For the handle, I took a dry cap of maple. I drilled a hole in the center of the bar, poured epoxy glue, scored a knife, smeared it with glue in empty places. After the glue dries, I grind it on the grinder, form the shape I need. After that I cook the hilt in wax for 2 hours, then polish with a rag. Well, that’s all, I had to sweat thoroughly. For the first time, this method is the easiest for me without borax.
Thank you all, do not judge strictly and to new Homemade
