In this article, we will again talk about the most necessary tools for the workshop, and the author of the YouTube channel “Frontierless Craftsman” will tell you how to make an extremely useful, yet simple tool, like an awl.
Materials
- Pallet boards
- copper pipe
- Spray paint
- PVA glue
- Oil for wood impregnation
— Abrasive polishing paste
- Second glue
— Two-component acrylic adhesive
- Sandpaper.
Instruments, used by the author.
— Multifunctional building metal detector
— Cordless Reciprocating Saw
— A circular saw
— Clamps
- Vise, miter box, hammer, file
— Bulgariancutting disc
- Jointer
— Electronic caliper
- Belt sander
- Lathe, reer, Meisel.
Manufacturing process.
For this project, the author selects a solid breed of wood with a nice pattern. This pallet wood is ideal for the handle of the future tool.
First, the master examines her with metal detector, and discovers hidden nails, marks with spray paint, and removes them. This is extremely important, otherwise with further processing, you can run into these nails with cutting tools. Of course, the author does not have the best metal detector for this business; it is more intended for security services, and searching for a gun under clothes. Exist multifunctional building detectorsthat are capable of detecting metal with high accuracy and at great depths. In addition, there are functions for searching for electrical wiring, and others.
Then the board is jointed on the machine in two planes.
The remaining two surfaces are cut with a circular saw, and the board is cut into several rectangular blanks.
Trying to glue several pieces together, the author smears them with glue on wood, which works as a lubricant. Before you combine all the elements together, the master erases a layer of glue in the very center of the blocks and puts there a little second glue. The latter acts as an activator, and contributes to the rapid and durable bonding of wood.
Now you can pull the blanks with clamps.
After the glue dries, we get such a cube.
Next is the formation of the handle for the awl on a lathe. The turning of the shape of the handle is carried out using a reer.
Then the neck of the handle is formed, its diameter should be equal to the inner diameter of the copper tube from which the clamping ring will be made.
The handle takes on a broad, rounded shape on the one hand, while on the other a small cut for the tip is formed.
For the manufacture of the metal part of the instrument, the author selects an old screwdriver for their hard steel, in which the handle fell apart. The master measures its diameter with a caliper, and drills a hole of the corresponding diameter in the end of the handle.
The author introduces a small amount of epoxy into the hole, and with a hammer drives the tip of the awl there.
Then the copper tube is fixed in the miter box with a clamp, and the master cuts off a piece of the tube, about 3 cm in length. The sharp edges of the resulting ring are filed.
It greases the end of the handle with epoxy resin and inserts a finished copper ring on it, the purpose of which is to compress the wood, and thereby fix the point of the awl inside the handle.
When the resin has completely hardened, the author clamps the workpiece in a vice, and cuts the bayonet to the desired length using a grinder.
Then the tip is ground on a grinding machine. During grinding, it is important to constantly cool the steel in water. Otherwise, the metal may release and lose its hardening. Then the tip will lose strength, and it will have to be hardened again.
The edge of the ring, and its surface is polished by sandpaper manually. Next, the workpiece is polished on a grinding machine with a felt disk and the use of polishing abrasive paste.
In the end, the author processes the wooden part of the awl with Danish oil, which instantly reveals the texture of the tree. Other oils can also be used, such as linseed or rosehip oil. Combining them with wax, you can achieve excellent moisture protection, and surface quality. About the method of manufacturing such a finish impregnation, I already spoke in this article.
Here is a beautiful and necessary tool turned out by the master.
I thank the author for the simple but useful device for the workshop!
