Another interesting model sailing wind generator. In this design, the energy transmitted by the wind is directed to pumping water.

Materials and details that the author needed to create this mechanism:

1) pipe with an inner diameter of 30 mm
2) canvas fabric
3) wooden cuttings with a diameter of about 30 mm
4) axis from a classic vase
5) the hub from the car
6) bolts and staples
7) pipe with a diameter of 250 mm
8) bearings
9) car camera

Let us consider in more detail the design of both the windmill itself and the pump, in conjunction with which it works.


The sail blades were made of canvas. To protect against strong winds, the sail tensioning thread is designed to break in certain places under excessive load, so that the sails become flags, thus protecting the main structure of the wind turbine from damage.

A structure was made from the semiaxis of the vaz car, which was a steel bar with machined seats for bearings. A hub made of a brake disc is attached to it by welding.

For fastening the spokes of the wind wheel, 8 tubes with a diameter of 30 mm were made. For the manufacture of tubes used water pipe. Wooden tubes are installed in these tubes. In stores they are sold as cuttings for hoes, rakes and their diameter coincides with the inner diameter of the used pipe. The tubes themselves, into which the cuttings are installed, are fixed on the hub with bolts on the brackets. The hub shaft was grooved for bearings that the author had available, and a smaller bearing was installed on the side of the crank.

Let us consider in more detail the design of the crank mechanism. To begin with, the author chose a suitable diameter pipe for securing the wheel bearing. The author welded this pipe to the hub, and installed a bearing inside. In order for the bearing to be in the pipe and not pop up, the pipe was rolled with a hammer. After final work, the crank stroke was about 60 mm, and the radius was 30 mm. The crank stroke was specially selected for the stroke of the pump diaphragm.

By the way, the pump by which the wind generator pumps water is also a makeshift design. The author chose a diaphragm type of pump, as it is better suited for this situation. The pump casing itself was made of a pipe with a diameter of 250 mm.

In the photographs, you may notice that the pump membrane was pressed by a plate with a round hole. The membrane was made from the camera of a car. To screw the valves into the pipe, two 3/4 inch threads were welded.

Accordingly, one valve works to absorb water, and the second to eject. The advantage of pumps of this design is that they are very simple to manufacture and therefore easy to repair. Moreover, such pumps themselves suck in water due to pressure.


After assembling all the main parts, the author proceeded to test this windmill. During the tests, the wind was not uniform 5-6 m / s, while it died down several times. This is also due to the fact that the windmill itself is close to the ground, if it is installed higher, then perhaps the work will be constant. However, even under such conditions, the pump showed excellent performance. pump performance in 10 minutes in a wind of 5 m / s was 10 liters of water in 10 minutes. Since the water does not leave when the windmill stops, but is self-absorbed due to the design of the pump, this can be considered a pretty acceptable result. In general, the tests demonstrated the operability of the structure as a whole, in the future the author plans to modernize both the pump itself and the wind turbine. In the pump, it was decided to replace the diaphragm with a stiffer one, and install the wind turbine on the tower, thereby ensuring constant operation of the pump even in light winds.
