The idea to make sliding gates for the yard appeared long ago. Bali all sorts of projects, but as it turned out, many of them had significant shortcomings. About five years ago I took up this business specifically. I can’t say that I discovered America. But I have my own opinion on this device.

One of the main things in this project is to make the canvas of the gate itself correctly. Without unnecessary and at the same time strong frame. He abandoned the braces that spoil the appearance of the gate. I calculated the sizes of jumpers, quantity. In order not to burden and at the same time give the necessary rigidity.

At first, my son-in-law helped me. One is difficult because of the size.

Drive purchased, works from the remote control. Installation and installation completely independently. Very satisfied. They work flawlessly. It is especially convenient in winter, you will always open the gate, no matter what the snow. The gate is separate from the gate. I think this is right, some do it in the gates themselves.

I took 50 to 50, 3mm wall and cut it myself. The carriages are also self-made, as I already wrote, but I made them with the possibility of adjustment - the lower bar is made of 12mm sheet and in the corners of its hole. And in concrete, the same platform with studs (18mm) is poured. Studs below serve as anchors (poured into concrete).On top of the studs are nuts, on them are carriages and again nuts. But in vain weakened the design - no adjustment was needed. When pouring the “curbstone” I put the pipe on the bricks in its place and immediately adjusted the formwork in height so that the carriages hanging from the pipe were concreted correctly. And then he took off the pipe, welded the gates on it and hung it back. All "top to bottom" came up ....
.. Drive - the motor from the washing machine and the gearbox do not know why. Chain drive - I was afraid to make a home-made “toothy” bar, but I found the finished one for only $ 150. The amphibian did not sign an expense order for such an amount for a 4 meter strip with teeth: anguished: Therefore, a thin-walled gutter riveted below, in which the chain lies. Of course, it is possible that way, but exact marking and installation (according to the template) is very required. In the upper part of the base I poured a powerful U-shaped channel (welded to flood valves), the size is somewhere 200mm. (was available). And at the same time, anchor bolts for carriages were welded to it. The gates themselves (4 m long and 2.2 m high. Working part, + 1.7 so-called counterbalance) turned out to be rather light, they lifted one freely during installation.
But it is advisable to buy a professional pipe together with the carriages. Sell it 6 m long (do not cut).
And what kind of professional pipes are doing now, and even you will weaken it?

... It all depends on your specific case. From your dimensions of the gate (hence their weight, hence their configuration), in what soil will you concrete, etc.
The only thing: carriages to concrete are fastened with anchor bolts, pre-cast into concrete ... (And can it be otherwise?)

I did carriages myself. It was a long time ago (I changed those "self-swinging" in the country). Then I didn’t have a drilling machine and I decided that I could drill a new (not broken) hammer drill under the bearing shafts by putting in it an ordinary chuck with a “tail”. (Drilling 10-ku iron with the 18th drill will not work)))))). He marked and drilled a small diameter drill.
... The gates worked for a long time, and when after 6 years I took them off, I found that not all sub-bearings work due to misalignment of the axes.)))). And nothing ... They work fine ....
.... Now again an interesting topic, because it will be necessary to make the gates in the house that I am currently reconstructing ...
