Probably no one needs to explain what an exciting activity is throwing knives. Unfortunately, they cost a lot, but this is not a problem, because you can make such a knife do it yourself! You just need a piece of metal plate and grinder. This is of course just an example of making a knife, in which the author used mild steel, you can take this more seriously and make a quality throwing knife for yourself.
Materials and tools for homemade:
- steel plate (steel should not be brittle);

- sandpaper;
- file;
- pencil, clamps, vice and so on.
The process of manufacturing a throwing knife:
Step one. Knife pattern
First of all, you should develop a knife template, it is better to do this on paper first. If you can’t come up with a template, it’s better to download the finished one from the Internet and print it on a printer. The template is convenient to draw on cardboard and cut, this will make it possible to understand whether it will be convenient to use.
Well, then we apply the template to the workpiece and circle it with a pencil.
Now you need to cut the profile of the future knife. You can work with hand tools like a hacksaw if the metal is soft. Well, or you can use a grinder. Just try not to overheat the metal, as it loses its strength. About overheating says a change in the color of the metal.
Step Two Coarse grinding
It is helpful to have a belt sander for this step. Using it, metal is easily polished, and it turns out to be much better than manual processing. If there is no such machine, it’s okay to bring the profile to the finished look using files. We clamp the workpiece in a vice and remove the excess metal parts.
Step Three Knife bevels
Like a cutting knife, a throwing knife also has a blade, although it is concentrated in the front of the blade. Thanks to him, the knife when throwing well hits the target. You must try to make the bevels symmetrical, so the knife will look more professional, and in fact it will work better.
To form the bevels, a belt sander would be needed again.But if not, the work can be done with a grinder or file. A grinder can do such work well, but you can accidentally overheat the metal, as a result of which it will quickly become dull. First of all, it is recommended to draw bevels on the blade, and then proceed to the formation.
Step Four The final stage of metal processing
In the end, you have to polish the metal surface well so that the knife sparkles and is smooth. Also do not forget to sharpen it well.
If you wish, you can make handles for your knife, however, the author has fallen off after a few throwings. If you will attach the pads, use more pins and epoxy glue. The knife should not hit the plate if it suddenly hits the target on the wrong side. It is necessary to make the metal protrude along the perimeter of the plates.
That's all, the knife is ready. True, it can quickly become dull, since mild steel is used. It is best to use high carbon steel for the knife so that it can be hardened. You can also harden only the cutting part of the knife. Such steels are used in tools, for example, files are made of them.
After hardening, it will definitely be necessary to make metal tempering, since the knife will be fragile and will fly to pieces after the first throw.
Step Five Testing a knife
Make yourself a target of wood, paint at your discretion. Now you can test the knife. For it to hit the target with a sharp end and get stuck, it will take some experience and time. Good luck
